Choosing the right Law School

For some, the choice of which law school to attend is an easy one.  Applicants usually tend to select the schools they perceive to be the most prestigious or those that offer a program of particular interest.  They may also select a school based on the greatest amount of financial support.  Some need to stay in a particular area because of family or job obligations.  They may choose nearby schools because of the part-time programs.

However, the majority of applicants will have to weigh a variety of personal and academic factors to come up with a list of potential schools.  Once you have a list, and more than one acceptance letter you will have to choose a school.  You should always carefully consider the offerings of each law school before making a decision.  The quality of a law school is certainly a major consideration; remember an estimation of quality is very subjective.  Factors such as the campus atmosphere, the school’s devotion to teaching and learning, and the applicant’s enthusiasm for the school also are very important.

Remember the school is probably going to be your home for three years.  Adjusting to law school and the general attitudes of a professional school is difficult enough without the additional hardship of culture shock.  If you do not like crowds, choosing a school in a big city is probably not a good idea.  In addition, if you have lived your entire life in an urban city can you face the change you will experience in a small town.  You also may want to ask yourself if you are already set in an unshakable lifestyle or if you are eager for a new environment.

After you have chosen the school you do want to attend, you need to think about how you will finance it.  Law School Loans are available.  Remember there may also be scholarships, grants, work-study, and of course the law school loan.  Most law student finance their education through loans, either from the federal government or private sources or both.  The amount of aid you receive and the form it takes is largely determined by the law schools.  Therefore, the law schools to which you are applying should be your primary source of information.  There are some questions you need to ask yourself to make the right decisions.

1.      What does the process of securing financial aid involve?

2.      How is eligibility for financial aid determined?

3.      What goes into a financial aid package?

4.      What can I do ahead of time to improve my chances of getting financial aid?

Changes in financial aid rules and regulations are ongoing.  In addition, law school policies vary often so it is your responsibility to stay current and to educate yourself about financial aid in much the same way you research law schools when deciding where to apply.  So, do your research when your are looking for a law school loan.  There are many options, choose the right option for your financial situation.
